Choosing The Right Removal Company

Moving home is a huge event in anyone's lifetime and making sure you choose the right removal company is essential. There are many types of removal company to choose from. There is your man and van outfit usually charging an hourly rate, right up to the big national companies capable of moving the contents of a mansion. There are also many small to medium companies in between. You can find a great company in any of these categories but making sure they are the right company is so important. Cost can often be a big factor in how a person selects a removal company to carry out their house move but ultimately you want a trusted company that looks after you and your belongings throughout the moving process.

This includes visiting your property to carry out an initial comprehensive home survey to establish exactly what is required for your move. This should be free of charge and no-obligation. The survey will ensure that the removal company knows exactly what’s involved in your move and provides a quotation accordingly. This way, both parties know where they stand when move day arrives.

It goes without saying that your belongings are precious and should be handled and moved with care and throughout the moving process. You need to know that your worldly possessions will be treated with respect from the moment the movers arrive on move day, to the moment the last item is placed into your new home.

Whether your goods are being packed, unpacked, moved or stored, you need to be able to rest assured that your chosen removal company is kind, courteous and professional throughout the moving experience.

Whilst price is usually going to be a factor, you should weigh up all your options. Sometimes you may get what you pay for so to speak. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not tarring all cheaper companies with the same brush. There will be some great movers out there that have lower overheads and are able to quote a lesser price, it’s just making sure they are a good company before agreeing a price that sounds too good to be true. Do your research on any company you’re considering before committing to them. Feedback from previous customers is a very handy tool and there are plenty of third party websites online these days with customer reviews on removal companies.

One quick tip regarding price: If you receive your quotes and prefer the more expensive company to the cheaper one, don’t be afraid to ask for a little discount. Be honest and tell them that you would prefer to use them but you have a cheaper quote. Most prices are open to negotiation. Some removal companies are registered members of associations such as Move Assured, The British Association of Movers (B.A.R) or the National Guild or Removers and Storers (N.G.R.S) that accredit them which is great for that extra peace of mind. That said 80-90% of removers aren’t members of associations. This is not essential and there are plenty of companies providing a superb service that aren’t.

A must ask question to any removal company before you accept a quote is ‘Do you have insurance?’ You will want a company that has comprehensive insurance in place, has a good trading history, has staff that are uniformed and vans with signage. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and for proof of any documentation.

Your Removal Company Should;

• Agree to conduct a home survey wherever possible or take detailed description of the requirements of your move. • Provide a comprehensive and easy to understand quotation with no hidden charges. If it’s unclear, don’t be afraid to ask if the quote includes V.A.T, waiting time, dismantling of furniture etc. • Ensure staff are competently trained and monitored. • Ensure all employees are uniformed and conduct themselves with a professional and hardworking attitude. • Have sufficient insurance in place to cover the true value of customer belongings, unless customer has arranged insurance themselves. • Provide quality customer service throughout and always put the customers’ needs first at all time. • Offer quality after sales service whenever required.

Top Tips:

• Be aware! If a company doesn't want to come out and complete a free home survey to provide a quote for your move be worried. You could be in for a surprise on the move day when a company turns up with a van or lorry that’s too small and/or try to charge you more money on the day of your move. • Look after your movers! If possible, keep the kettle unpacked until very last. Your movers will appreciate a break from time to time. A packet of biscuits or a bacon sandwich always go down well too. Removal companies work very hard on any move day. If you think about the furniture in your home right now, they have to carry it out of the house, onto the lorry, back off the lorry at your new home then into your new home. That furniture can get heavy.

They say moving home is one of the most stressful events in a person’s lifetime. There a plenty of great removal companies out there that can take a lot of this stress away from you. Make sure you choose the right one!
